STOP Having Fun!

The WallStreet Journal online has a fun article about stopping the stupid team building and "fun" events in the offices around the world.

Who's the poster child for this? Michael Scott of course!

"One artistic portrayal of the pain it can cause, however, can be found in NBC sitcom “The Office,” in which the hapless boss Michael Scott’s attempts to liven up his workplace with fun are a constant torment to his employees."

A Fun Workplace is Win-Win

Globe Life from Canada has a story about "A fun workplace is a win-win for employers and their staff". And of course the reference back to our show!

"Think Michael Scott of NBC's The Office. The socially inept regional manager's jokes are malapropos and often downright mean.

"Michael in The Office is certainly an exaggeration, or at least I hope he's an exaggeration, of managers out there," said Joel Goodman, director of the Humour Project in Saratoga, N.Y., who advises companies on how to get more "smileage" out of their employees."

Two Cents & Five Questions With...

... Ursula Burton, Actress

The Office Universe expands a little more today with a special Tuesday edition of Two Cents & Five Questions With...

Today we are happy to publish a recent interview we had with Ursula Burton. You may have seen her in "The West Wing", "The Practice" or in the film "Just Friends". However, Ursula is a member of The Office Universe because of her role as Hannah Smotridge-Barr, the former Stamford employee who spends some brief time in Scranton.

Recently Ursula shared her TwoCents and Five Answers with us. Enjoy!

TwoCents: Could you tell TheTwoCents readers about yourself and how you started in "show biz"?
Ursula Burton: My mother is a writer and my father was a jazz musician before he became a professor, so the arts were highly valued in my family. It may sound strange, but becoming an actor somehow seemed inevitable to me. I studied acting at Yale University and then at Michael Howard's Studio in NYC. Eventually I made the move out to LA.

The State Gives Office an Award

The State is South Carolina's homepage.

Writer Neil White talks about The Office in a recent article where he discusses Emmys and gives some of his won awards which he calls the "Talkies".

"Now it’s almost certain that you’ll be outraged at least once during the telecast. Emmy rarely gets it right. Do you really believe that any other show could be deemed funnier than “The Office” when it comes to picking the best comedy series? We’ll see."

Not listed in OT's story and that I saw at Target were 2 more stressballs. A black one and a white one.

Carell Interview in NY Times

In a great piece in the NY Times this weekend, Steve Carell talks about his new movies, her persona in Hollywood and of course some Office stuff.

BE WARNED! A scene from the upcoming season is described. Be smart and don't read this if you fear any kinds of spoilers!

“I never want to hear myself complain about how grueling acting on a TV show is,” he said. “We’re far too lucky. I see too many people work too hard at jobs they don’t enjoy to complain about acting on a show that makes me laugh really hard every day.”

Read the article HERE.

Weekly Standard Asks If We're Having Fun Yet

The news outlet has put an article together about what makes the workplace 'tick'. Of course they mention our favorite show!

"The genius of the NBC television show The Office (and the original BBC show from which it derived) is that boss Michael Scott, manager of a failing paper-distribution branch in Scranton, goes well beyond the Dilbert-esque stereotype of the dictator cracking the whip over his cubicle monkeys. Armed with nothing but business-book clichés and a desire to be loved (he is nearly incapable of firing a person, or "counseling them out," in the current parlance), Michael fancies himself a fun guy, an entertainer. His employees don't think he's the least bit funny, yet the Dunder Mifflin office is a stage, and Michael is its headliner."

Read it HERE.

Professors Write Book on "Office" Philosophy

Crystal also sent over this little nugget.

King’s College professors Bill Irwin and Kyle Johnson have written a philosophy book based on NBC’s hit sitcom “The Office.”

"The intended audience is fans of 'The Office,' and of course, we have a higher percentage of fans locally," Dr. Irwin said.
Examining the show from a philosophical perspective, the book is expected to contain 21 chapters, ranging from philosophical subjects like Marxism to "The Hostile Office: Michael as a sexual harasser."

Be A Part of The Office Convention!

The Scranton Times-Tribune posted this:

"On Tuesday, organizers of the first "The Office" Convention - set for Oct. 26-28 in downtown Scranton - will host a preconvention expo from 5 to 7 p.m. in the grand ballroom of the Radisson at Lackawanna Station hotel. There, the convention's entire event schedule will be unveiled. As of right now, no cast members from the Scranton-set NBC sitcom have signed on to participate in the event.

In addition, any local businesses, bands, nonprofit groups and volunteers who want to take part in the convention will have the chance to sign up."
