Office Universe Interview - Rich Sommer

Rich Sommer has been part of the amazing cast, as Harry Crane, on "Mad Men" for the past two seasons and he had a great comic turn as Doug in the hit "The Devil Wears Prada".

What does this mean to us here in Dunderworld? Easy - he's the guy trying to break-up the beloved JAM. In season 5, Rich has played the role of Alex - Pam's art-school friend.

Recently ScrantonBranchOffice.com caught up with Rich and he shared his TwoCents with us about his role on The Office, PB&J, where his name comes from, Citizen Kane and more. Enjoy!

ScrantonBranchOffice: Could you please tell our readers a little about yourself and how you got your start in "show biz"?

Rich Sommer: I have a beautiful wife and daughter, I love Minnesota and board games, and I'm named after my father.

My big start came from doing a showcase with my Grad School classmates. I was approached by a fantastic manager, Davis Spylios Management, and we went from there. It's been amazing ever since.

SBO Exclusive With Ed Helms and Angela Kinsey

After yesterday's media conference call with Angela Kinsey and Ed Helms, we were able to follow-up with Ed Helms for some topics that Ed only talked with ScrantonBranchOffice.com about.

UPDATE: Angela Kinsey was nice enough to do a follow up with answers to these questions too!

SBO: Scranton is rumoring another possible Convention there next year. Since the first one was such a blast, would you be worried that a second one couldn’t meet that or would you be excited to see how it could be topped?

Ed Helms: I had such a great time at the first convention, if another one happens I have no doubt it will be great. But I wouldn't worry about trying to top anything from the first one. Anytime you get a large gathering of Office fans you're guaranteed a good time, plain and simple.

Angela Kinsey: As long as there are Office conventions I'll be happy. To see our fans supporting our show with such enthusiasm is great.

SBO: As the show has progressed from season to season, the ensemble characters have really had the ability to flesh out their characters. What are some of your favorite characteristics that you’ve been able to really focus on with your characters?

Ed Helms: Andy has grown more and more complex as the show progresses and that's really fun for me as an actor. He started off fairly simple - anger prone and generally obnoxious. But lately we've seen a more tender, vulnerable side of Andy. He has put his heart and soul right out on the table for Angela which is beautifully earnest and compassionate. I just love riding that line between obnoxious and sweet, its a potent cocktail.

Angela Kinsey: I love that our writers are constantly exploring our characters. It gives us all such depth. Discovering my character's crazy love for Dwight has been such a treat. And of course now she has many layers in this love triangle!

A HUGE thanks to Ed Helms and Angela Kinsey for spending a little extra time to answer these two questions that we thought the Dunderworld would want answered!

Interview with Angela Kinsey and Ed Helms

What a fun hour I just had on a conference call with the media and Angela Kinsey (Angela Martin) and Ed Helms (Andy Bernard).

Angela and Ed talked about their characters and the show and of course the great fan base they have.

Here are some of the tidbits we picked up on the call today. We will be doing a full interview recap with them in the near future, but I thought I would share these notes to you guys now!

When asked about the future episodes Angela and Ed said that upcoming episodes have a lot of ‘fun’ stuff for these two to play, but couldn't really elaborate. They said it is so much fun to show up at table reads to see what’s going to happen that week. They are fans of the show and share in the anticipation of what is going to happen. They equate the anticipation of going to the table-reads of the script to fans waiting to watch each week's episode.

Voice From the Office Universe With...

... Trevor Einhorn, Actor.

Recently NBC aired the season four episode entitled "Job Fair". It's also currently on Hulu for your viewing pleasure.

Being a week out from the SEASON FIVE premiere, we caught up with another Voice from within The Office Universe.

Trevor Einhorn has appeared in shows such as Joan of Arcadia, Sons and Daughters and played Frasier's son, Frederick, on Frasier. In the world of Dunder Mifflin, Trevor played "Justin" a kid just trying to get an internship at his high school's job fair. Michael didn't want him (at first) but we did so we could get his TwoCents on working on the show!

Enjoy!

ScrantonBranchOffice: Tell TheTwoCents readers about yourself and how you started in "show biz".
Trevor Einhorn: I started acting when I was five. My older sister of three years wanted to act, and I got schlepped to all the auditions. It was at one commercial audition when my sister came out with a cookie, and I said "wow they give you food at these things?" That was it, I was sold. Who knew that my love for cookies at age five would turn into a career.

ScrantonBranchOffice Exclusive Interview - Jackie Debatin

Recently we were able to chat with Jackie Debatin who Office fans know and love as "Elizabeth the Stripper" from the "Ben Franklin" and "Fun Run" episodes of "The Office".

To help us celebrate tonight's Office season four finale, Jackie has agreed to share a little about herself, her character and what's coming up next.

Enjoy!

ScrantonBranchOffice: Could you tell our readers about yourself and how you started in "show biz"?
Jackie Debatin: I'm orginally from Southern Illinois, and moved out to LA in 1992...I knew one casting director, that a professor of mine introduced me to...Looking back now, I'd say it was a crazy move....I had studied theater in college and knew I wanted to be an actress...It took a long time to get things going honestly....I just got little bit parts here and there, and keep it going...I also run my own Accounting company here in LA, so that keeps the money rolling in when acting is slow...which was of course so funny when they had Dwight ask me to answer phones in the "accounting" dept in THE OFFICE...

ScrantonBranchOffice Exclusive Interview - "The Office and Philosophy"

Blackwell Publishing has recently released a book entitled “The Office and Philosophy – Scenes from the Unexamined Life”. The book explores philosophy found within the BBC and NBC versions of “The Office” and was edited by J. Jeremy Wisnewski.

Political correctness, sexual harassment, business ethics, office flirtation, and humiliation are hot button points that show up in this snapshot of life. Even as it captures something of the human condition, “The Office” put the ‘fun’ in dysfunctional. “This is philosophy that is meant to introduce you to, and help you understand, issues in a way that is as enjoyable as the show itself.”

“I laughed and laughed and laughed… and then I realized I was reading a different book. And then I read this one. It’s pretty good, too.”Oscar Nunez

J. Jeremy Wisnewski is an Assistant of Philosophy at Hartwick College. He is the author of “Wittgenstein and Ethical Inquiry: A Defense of Ethics as Clarification” (2007) as well as the editor of “Family Guy and Philosophy” (2007). According to his biography his next project is to play Michael Scarn in a new production of “Threat Level: Midnight”. (No, not really.) Recently I was able to sit down for a conversation with Jeremy about the book. Enjoy!

ScrantonBranchOffice: Hey, how are you Jeremy?
J. Jeremy Wisnewski: I’m good, how are you?
SBO: I’m doing well thank you.

SBO:This is a great book as far as philosophy goes in general, but what made you and the other writers decide to gear it on The Office?
JJW:From moment one, when I started seeing the promos for The Office, I was immediately intrigued. I saw the US version first. When I started watching it, both the US version and later on the British version, I just knew there was something there. It seems as though the show is really capturing something universal. I think that is evidenced by the fact that there’s a US version, a British version, a German version, a French version and a Canadian version. All of these shows are tapping in to a lot of things, but one of the things they’re tapping into is the struggle for meaning in advanced industrial nations. That’s a large way of saying, I guess, that work stinks and it’s very difficult to get any meaning out of what you do. It’s very difficult to be a paper pusher.

ScrantonBranchOffice Exclusive Interview with Dwight's "Night Out" Date!

Cassie Fliegel is the lucky actress who was picked of all the basketball team to make-out with one Mr. Dwight K. Schrute during April 24th's episode of "The Office" entitled "Night Out".

I caught up with Cassie after the episode aired to get her thoughts on everything about the episode - acting, trailers and of course the big kissing scene!

ScrantonBranchOffice: Could you please tell our readers a little bit about yourself and how you got your start in the "biz"?
Cassie Fliegel: Sure, I moved to LA after graduating from Harvard (2006), to pursue a career in film and television. I had done a lot of theater back in Boston, but had to start from scratch when I got to California. You know, doing background work to get my vouchers, acting in student films to add to my reel, sending out headshots and resumes to agencies, etc. Eventually I landed an agent and got some smaller parts in films, television, commercials, infomercials, all that good stuff...

SBO Exclusive Interview With Drew Powell

I recently had a quick second to chat with Drew Powell who played the bartender/waiter from Poor Richard's Pub in the "Local Ad" episode of "The Office" this season.

In keeping up with our quest to learn all about the people who make "The Office" special I asked him to give us a little 411 on who he is. Here's what he had to say:

ScrantonBranchOffice: How long have you been working in the 'biz'?
Drew Powell: I've been an actor all my life but a "professional" for the last 9 years. I've been blessed to have had a lot of varied and interesting roles over my career so far.

SBO: Were you a fan of the show before you got the role?
DP: I was a huge fan of the BBC version of "The Office" and therefore was VERY suspect of this new American version. I boycotted it for the first season but eventually gave in and have been a fan ever since.

SBO: What was it like to be in a show you were a fan of?
DP: It was great fun to be in a show that I'm such a fan of. There were a few funny lines that didn't make it to air for various reasons, but it was great regardless.

SBO: Any chances we'll see "The Bartender" again?
DP: I'm hopeful that the producers and writers will see fit to bring my character back at some point. I mean, Poor Richards will no doubt continue to be the hang out for the folks of DM. I don't know, maybe a love triangle between Jim, Pam and the bartender who looks slightly like her old fiancee? I can see it!

SBO: What's coming up for you?
DP: I'll be on ER tonight! Thursday April 24th.

A HUGE thank you to Drew Powell for helping us to continue rounding out the Office world around us! Be sure to look for Drew tonight on ER after an all new "The Office"!

SBO Interview with Rainn Wilson and Greg Daniels

It's been weeks since my call with Rainn Wilson and Greg Daniels, but in celebration of the second new post-strike episode of "The Office" I've finally gotten around to share our conversation with you! Many of you have read the full transcript of this media session, but this was my own one-on-one(two?) part of it all.

Rainn Wilson plays Dwight Schrute on "The Office" and was seen in movies such as "Juno", "The Last Mimzy", "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" and can you find him in "Galaxy Quest"? He joined "The Office" executive producer/writer, Greg Daniels, to speak with the media a few weeks ago. Daniels has been a part of "The Office" team since the beginning and is also responsible for the FOX hit "King of the Hill".

Enjoy!

ScrantonBranchOffice: Hey, welcome back guys. It’s been too long.

Greg Daniels: Hey, thank you.

Rainn Wilson: Hi.

Greg Daniels: Can I just say - have you heard that before because I mean, I don’t know if it was just me but I heard a lot of people saying that’s the thing that they missed most during the strike?

Not for me to say, of course, but if you wanted to say that on the other line so other people would write it, I’d be - you know, I’m not going to stand in your way.

SBO: Absolutely. I would say that 90% of the questions into my website were about The Office during the strike. You also were the faces that the audience was going to on the strike lines.

Every website has a quote from some Office writer or something. I don’t know. Maybe you’re funny. Who knows?

I also want to let you know that, Rainn, my three and a half year old niece calls you squishy head because she has the little stress ball with your face from Target.

Rainn Wilson: That’s funny. My wife calls me squishy head, too, sometimes.

SBO: Well there you go. I’ve been lucky enough to sit through the Scranton convention and I was curious - a lot of the actors have said that they had this great adrenaline rush and the writers coming back from that convention and were really kind of gung-ho.

And then all of a sudden the strike hit at the exact same time. So my question, I guess for Greg is were you able to kind of recapture that at all when you guys got back? Is there anything from the convention, from being in Scranton that you’re going to add?

And maybe Rainn, you could talk, too - were the people who were at the convention - what kind of stories have you heard? Those kinds of things - if you guys could talk about that for a couple minutes?

Greg Daniels: Sure. The convention was very fun and, you know, it was a real wonderful experience to see how many thousands of fans came from all over the world and there were people from Ireland and Oregon. And, you know, all - really people came from a really great distance.

And, you know, and this was my first time in Scranton although we’ve done so much research on the Internet. And I was really struck by how beautiful Scranton is, which is not what we really have been portraying in here from our (unintelligible).

And the street here in California. But we saw some of the sights like Nay Aug Park and the Treehouse, which is this amazing wheelchair accessible treehouse that they’ve built over this gorge.

And there’s a lot of weird kind of Scranton-specific things that we saw, that, you know, will I’m sure come into different episodes. And the entire writing staff was there and they all had different experiences at, you know, driving around and going to Scranton bars, and meeting the policewomen.

And, you know, stuff like that. So I think it was very good for the creativity of everybody here.

Rainn Wilson: Really it’s a lovely town. Like there are big old buildings, 100 years old, all over the downtown - big brick buildings that have a really cool industrial look, and a lot of iron work. And stuff like that.

And there’s beautiful hills all around Scranton. It’s like down in this little valley and there’s lovely trees and hills all over the place. A very green city.

SBO: Yeah.

Rainn Wilson: Brought to you by the City of Scranton Tourist Bureau.

SBO: Thank you very much.

So, there you have it. Many thanks to Rainn and Greg for taking the time to chat with me like that. Be sure to watch for new episodes of "The Office" on NBC every Thursday until the end of the season!

Premiere Night Special Interview!!

... Angela Kinsey, Actress

The day has finally arrived. It seems like an eternity since we last were watching new footage of our friends at Dunder Mifflin in Scranton! Today, the wait ends. We will know what happens to Jim and Pam, Michael and Jan, and Dwight and Angela!

Oh, speaking of Angela, the one and only Angela Kinsey spent some time to share her TwoCents and Five Answers with us!!

Angela has appeared everywhere since the show began, from guesting on "Thank God You're Here" to numerous appearances on talk shows, internet specials, Emmy broadcasts, and movie appearances! She's everywhere and we consider ourselves fortunate to include TheTwoCents on that list of Angela Kinsey sightings!

Enjoy!

TwoCents: Could you tell the TwoCents readers what path led you to "The Office"?
Angela Kinsey: My path to The Office was a long and random one which makes it that much sweeter now. I lived in New York before moving out to Los Angeles. I had been interning on Conan O'Brien and taking acting classes at HB Studios. I didn't know a single person in Los Angeles. It was pretty daunting but so exciting. Ten years later I got The Office! Years of auditioning, performing improv and sketch comedy, taking classes and just never giving up. It wasn't easy but every step led me here.

Remember that reality show from 2003 where a guy was put into a house, thinking it was a reality show, but everyone else were actors? The Joe Schmo Show! Remember "Kip" on the show? That was actor Lance Krall, or as he's known to us in the Office Universe - Sensei Ira!

Recently Lance spent some time with TheTwoCents and shared his TwoCents and Five Answers about being involved with "The Office" during the season 2 episode entitled "The Fight".

Enjoy!

TwoCents: Tell TheTwoCents readers about yourself and how you started in "show biz".
Lance Krall: I started doing improv in college with a bunch of loosers and we eventually co-founded The Whole World Theatre. I did shows there for about eight years and finally decided to move to LA in 2000.
