Greg Daniels Says Real Spinoff Could Still Happen

Executive Producer Greg Daniels continues to be responsible for The Office, and he is penning the new Amy Poehler comedy with SNL vet Michael Schur for NBC. But he's not ruling out the possibility of an Office spinoff sometime in the near future. The Poehler project was originally thought to be a Office spinoff until Daniels and Schur took it in a different direction and developed it as a mockumentary about small-town government. But Daniels hasn't closed the door on expanding the Dunder-Mifflin family.

"It's not possible, physically, for me to be involved in it right this second, but I'm talking to people over at The Office about another idea, and [The Office's British creator] Stephen Merchant came back and directed an episode of The Office so were were talking about the idea," Daniels told critics at NBC's annual Television Critics Tour on Thursday. "It's possible that some combination of other Office people could produce it without my giving blood for it."

Daniels' untitled Poehler project, which also stars Rashida Jones, will debut April 9.

SBO Interview with Rainn Wilson and Greg Daniels

It's been weeks since my call with Rainn Wilson and Greg Daniels, but in celebration of the second new post-strike episode of "The Office" I've finally gotten around to share our conversation with you! Many of you have read the full transcript of this media session, but this was my own one-on-one(two?) part of it all.

Rainn Wilson plays Dwight Schrute on "The Office" and was seen in movies such as "Juno", "The Last Mimzy", "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" and can you find him in "Galaxy Quest"? He joined "The Office" executive producer/writer, Greg Daniels, to speak with the media a few weeks ago. Daniels has been a part of "The Office" team since the beginning and is also responsible for the FOX hit "King of the Hill".

ScrantonBranchOffice: Hey, welcome back guys. It’s been too long.

Greg Daniels: Hey, thank you.

Rainn Wilson: Hi.

Greg Daniels: Can I just say - have you heard that before because I mean, I don’t know if it was just me but I heard a lot of people saying that’s the thing that they missed most during the strike?

Not for me to say, of course, but if you wanted to say that on the other line so other people would write it, I’d be - you know, I’m not going to stand in your way.

SBO: Absolutely. I would say that 90% of the questions into my website were about The Office during the strike. You also were the faces that the audience was going to on the strike lines.

Every website has a quote from some Office writer or something. I don’t know. Maybe you’re funny. Who knows?

I also want to let you know that, Rainn, my three and a half year old niece calls you squishy head because she has the little stress ball with your face from Target.

Rainn Wilson: That’s funny. My wife calls me squishy head, too, sometimes.

SBO: Well there you go. I’ve been lucky enough to sit through the Scranton convention and I was curious - a lot of the actors have said that they had this great adrenaline rush and the writers coming back from that convention and were really kind of gung-ho.

And then all of a sudden the strike hit at the exact same time. So my question, I guess for Greg is were you able to kind of recapture that at all when you guys got back? Is there anything from the convention, from being in Scranton that you’re going to add?

And maybe Rainn, you could talk, too - were the people who were at the convention - what kind of stories have you heard? Those kinds of things - if you guys could talk about that for a couple minutes?

Greg Daniels: Sure. The convention was very fun and, you know, it was a real wonderful experience to see how many thousands of fans came from all over the world and there were people from Ireland and Oregon. And, you know, all - really people came from a really great distance.

And, you know, and this was my first time in Scranton although we’ve done so much research on the Internet. And I was really struck by how beautiful Scranton is, which is not what we really have been portraying in here from our (unintelligible).

And the street here in California. But we saw some of the sights like Nay Aug Park and the Treehouse, which is this amazing wheelchair accessible treehouse that they’ve built over this gorge.

And there’s a lot of weird kind of Scranton-specific things that we saw, that, you know, will I’m sure come into different episodes. And the entire writing staff was there and they all had different experiences at, you know, driving around and going to Scranton bars, and meeting the policewomen.

And, you know, stuff like that. So I think it was very good for the creativity of everybody here.

Rainn Wilson: Really it’s a lovely town. Like there are big old buildings, 100 years old, all over the downtown - big brick buildings that have a really cool industrial look, and a lot of iron work. And stuff like that.

And there’s beautiful hills all around Scranton. It’s like down in this little valley and there’s lovely trees and hills all over the place. A very green city.

SBO: Yeah.

Greg Daniels Discusses Strike with Hollywood Panel

Hollywood Reporter states:
"So, where do we go from here?

That was the question posed Tuesday to a panel of industry leaders at the Hollywood Radio & Television Society's Newsmaker Luncheon -- a little more than six weeks after the 100-day WGA strike came to an end. The answer still seems unclear.

When the strike ended, "The Office" executive producer Greg Daniels said, Universal Media Studios, which produces the NBC comedy, took writers from several of its shows out for a nice dinner to make amends. Since then, he said, things haven't been as contentious between the networks/studios and writers as they were during the strike.

"The executives in the scripted entertainment department are glad to see the strike over, and all I get (from my writers) is relief to be back to work," he said, adding that his writers are at work on another set of "Office" webisodes, following the 10 that became available in summer 2006 on NBC.com."


Variety has:
""The Office" exec producer Greg Daniels said he believed the sacrifice made by scribes wouldn't be made up by their new gains, but that it was a price they had to pay for future generations.

"If our kids want to be writers, they'll have a better framework," he said."

Hello Dunderheads!

I just had an amazing time this afternoon. I was on a media conference call with Rainn Wilson and Greg Daniels for the past 90 minutes. I will have my full interview with them up in the near future, but I wanted to share some tidbits for you that they both shared!

There is new information here, and nothing too spoiler-like, but if you're a puritan for Office, you may want to stop reading now.

For the rest of you, here's some of the fun facts that I've gleaned from the call.

- There was a Christmas Episode mostly finished before the strike. Greg stated that they are going to vulture some of the material from it for the future.

- Rainn Wilson has a Dwight bobble-head on a shelf in his house. His 3 year old son used to love playing with it.

- John Krasinski will be the 'host' of the April 3rd airing of the past four Office episodes and will shows clips from "Leatherheads" too.

- Schrute Space (Dwight's Blog) on NBC.com used to be written by Rainn, however this year he's handed the reigns over to a staff writer to do Schrute Space.

- There was a cameo written for Mackenzie Crook (Gareth Keenan on the BBC "Office") earlier in the show. It never came to pass because Mackenzie was busy with Pirates of the Carribean.

- The producers of "The Office" have a deal with the producers of "Unhitched" so that they could still use Rashida Jones (Karen) on the show. They have one more 'use' left in that current agreement.

- Greg Daniels stated that they are looking into "playing with time" on the show. Kind of like LOST. [I think this means we could see some flashbacks. Wouldn't it be great if they did flashbacks like Friends used to?]

- Angela's real-life pregnancy will not be written into the show (Kate Flannery mentioned this in her blog too). You'll see Angela behind the copy machine a lot.

- We're going to see some of Dwight's ex-girlfriends and those storylines in the future.

Scranton Story - Cast Q&A

An enormous crowd was spilling into the University of Scranton's gymnasium. We were at the very end of this throng and I didn't know how far away we would be sitting. Lord beer me strength if I need to sit in the back of this place.

One glance at my Corporate ID and I'm led to the front seats. We end us third row, just off center of the stage. We are about an hour away from the cast arriving and are treated to the song stylings of the Univ of Scranton Jazz Ensemble. They did a great job of playing upbeat songs while we all waited.

Finally the magic hour of 5pm hits and the large jumbo tron goes into the video that the people in Scranton made and sent to Greg Daniels and company at The Office to convince them to come. Big applause. However the real treat was a 10 minute video clip of bloopers from this current season! I'm already excited for the season 4 DVD now!

Finally Matt Smith and the local Scranton Weather man take to the stage to introduce us to our cast! Andy Buckley (CFO David Wallace) leads the charge with his hand up in the air. He's followed by Bobby Ray Shafer (Bob Vance), Phyllis Smith (Phyllis), Creed Bratton (Creed), Oscar Nunez (Oscar), Kate Flannery (Meredith), Craig Robinson (Darryl), Mindy Kaling (Kelly), Leslie David Baker (Stanley), Melora Hardin (Jan), Brian Baumgartner (Kevin), Angela Kinsey (Angela), Ed Helms (Andy) and Greg Daniels (Executive Producer).

The cast spoke for almost 2 hours. Questions were pre-submitted via the internet and were read to the cast, and then they opened it up to the fans in the house to ask questions.

Here are some great questions and answers we got:

- Greg Daniels stated that Angela is probably least like her character while Mindy chimed in that BJ was most like Ryan!

- A fan yelled out Rid it dit di doo! And Ed Helms answered back and broke into Andy's version of Drift Away from the Product Recall episode.

- Ed feels that The Office is different than the Daily Show because he gets to play a character, not just a super swarmy version of himself.

- Angela was the first to get "THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID" yelled at her by the fans AND cast when she said preparing to be mean as Angela is "pretty hard". TWSS was mentioned a ton of times over the course of the panel.

- Brian was asked to recreate the Kool-Aid Man facial expression and he complied.

- Melora enjoys the dance she gets to do between domestic Jan and vixen Jan. She said the character has a lot of meat to sink her teeth into. That's what she said!

- Leslie was seen smiling ear to ear over the entire course of the Convention. He's one of the happiest people I've ever seen. A fan asked how he keeps so straight faced as Stanley and Leslie replied that he does a lot of biting his tongue to keep from cracking up. He thinks about dead pets and such.

- Mindy can't pick between Writing and Acting, likening it to having to choose which parent you want to go with after a divorce. She said that both are "Awesome".

- Craig stated that he hopes we'll see more Darryl and when about his relationship with Kelly he answered by leaning over and kissing Mindy Kaling. Ed answered with Rid it dit di doo!

- Kate didn't think she could top that and Oscar said - WATCH! He leaned over to move in for a kiss with a very confused Creed. He stopped and pointed at the crowd as if to say "Don't start!" Kate said she believes one of Meredith's ex husbands was a serial killer or something dark like that. She also loved that everyone in Scranton thought she was beautiful, and I must say, she really is in person!

- Oscar said that improv really helps with comedic acting. He suggested that if anyone was thinking of being a doctor or lawyer or something that they should quit school and join an improv troupe.

- Creed was asked how closely related he is with his character on the show. Creed launched into a character story involving Ed Truck, bus rides to Scranton in the 60s, etc. Ed mentioned that Creed doesn't really know it's a TV show at all.

- Phyllis thanks all the cast members she read with as a casting director in helping to cultivate her skills as an actress.

- Bobby believes that Bob Vance should get Phyllis an Escalade with spinners for their anniversary that's coming up! Poor Bobby had lost his voice and had to whisper his answers to Phyllis for the rest of the time.

- All smiles, Andy Buckely was fast becoming a crowd favorite as chants of CFO CFO were erupting from the crowd whenever he was asked a question.

- A fan asked Greg how close MASH is to the Office and he answered, not at all. Angela said that some have compared Dwight and Angela to Frank Burns and Hotlips from MASH however.

- Ed and Brian went to high school together.

- Angela loves the idea of her character being with Dwight but thinks she'll try out Nardog (Andy Bernard) for a while.

- Brian doesn't know how to play the drums and was taught by Paul Lieberstein (Toby) how to for the Phyllis's Wedding episode.

- Mindy likens to the Kelly of recent seasons to a mallrat.

- Craig answered his next question by kissing Mindy again.

- Kate was so happy to be able to do her own stunt of jumping on Michael's car in the Fun Run episode. Kent Zbornak did it first to prove to Kate it would be ok.

- Melora told the crowd that Andy Buckley is actually a stock broker for Merryl Lynch and he comes down to do his scenes on days off from his real job.

- Ed is asked to sing Rainbow Connection and he does. Then mentioned that it should really be answered by Craig and Mindy kissing - and they do again. To which Mindy said Rid it dit di doo!(Watch Video)

- Ed was prompted by the cast to do Tom Brokaw and Al Gore impressions. They were spot on.

- Melora was asked how they achieved Jan's new breasts and Melora said it's a strap on - THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID! Ed followed up with, yes, that is what she said, she just said it.

- Mindy said that The Injury is the favorite episode she's written.

- Phyllis has a broken ankle and according to Melora, Phyllis used to be a professional dancer.

- The audience asked Ed to sing Take A Chance on Me. One of the people on the phone in the episode was John Michael Higgins (Best in Show, The Breakup, etc). Ed did sing Take A Chance and the cast backed him up. (Watch Video)

- Ed was asked to finish "Give me a break, give me a break, break me off a piece of that..." Ed answered Football Cream. Then the girl said she brought him a KitKat bar and Ed said that was nice but he didn't know what that had to do with anything. The man is very quick on his feet with the funny. Actually, they all were.

- If Creed was an animal he'd be a duck billed platypus.

- Greg Daniels was friends with people named Jim Halpert and Andy Bernard in high school. He also blamed being lazy for using the actors names for their characters (i.e. Angela, Oscar, Creed).

- Legend states a UFO landed in Carbondale, the next town over. Look for this to be mentioned in a future Dwight storyline. They all seemed intrigued about his.

- Craig (after kissing Mindy a last time until she mentioned her boyfriend was somewhere in the audience) said that they all are in awe of how they are being treated this weekend. He said it was "beautiful" and "overwhelming".

- Brian spoke about meeting people who came from IRELAND to attend the Convention.

- Melora called this event surreal and Leslie said it was historical and ground breaking. Angela said nothing will ever compare with this. Ed called it Dawesome.

This was one of the greatest moments of the entire Convention. The cast enjoyed being up there with each other as much as we enjoyed watching them. They were all laughing all the time. Just like us. I'm SURE it will be on a future DVD!

Back to the hotel to change yet again. All this wasn't even CLOSE to the end of the day! But that's another story...

May 4, 2006 gave us a laundry list of pranks that Jim has played on Dwight - Jim felt bad by the end... but then, not so much! Also, who complained about Pam's wedding planning? Jim!?!? Not a win win... win situation.

Michael's highfalutin attempts to resolve conflicts in the office only serve to stir up petty differences and forgotten arguments among his employees, causing bedlam and tumult at Dunder Mifflin. Season 2 - Episode 19 - Drug Testing

Dwight found a joint in the parking lot on April 27, 2006. WHO could it be? Jim won't tell, because he's been Jinxed by Pam. Hi... Hey.

When half a joint is found on company property, Dwight dons his Lackawanna County volunteer deputy sheriff's uniform (complete with badge) and launches an investigation. He brings in a professional drug tester---a turn of events that makes Michael nervous. Meanwhile, Jim and Pam play a game in which Jim is forbidden to speak. - TV Guide

Season 2 - Episode 16 - Valentine's Day

The Office did Halloween and Christmas - it only makes sense that Valentine's Day shows up too on February 9, 2006. We also saw the birth of the Dwight Bobblehead! Who has one? I do!

Michael takes a bite out of the Big Apple when he heads to corporate headquarters in New York City for a meeting with Jan (Melora Hardin) on Valentine's Day.
